Benzoic Acid:
Benzoic Acid, commonly known as sodium benzoate or benzene carboxylic acid, is an organic molecule having the formula C7H6O2. It can be found in benzoic acids and a variety of other chemical compounds, including benzoin resin. Benzoic acid was historically utilised in toothpaste and deodorant because of its fungicidal, antibacterial, and antifungal effects.
Benzoic acid is a white crystalline chemical that is used as a precursor to a variety of other molecules. It's mostly found in foods, beverages, and personal care goods as a preservative. Benzoic acid is utilised in pesticides and textiles, in addition to meals and medications. Furthermore, the FDA has approved its usage as an active component in some toothpastes.
This chemical is made by oxidising phenol with sulfuric acid and then neutralising it with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. It can also be made by hydrogenating toluene diisocyanate in the presence of a catalyst such as nickel, cobalt, iron, or ruthenium. It is also utilised as a precursor in the production of other chemicals such as methyl salicylate, sodium benzoate, and toluene sulfonic acid.
The sodium salt of benzoic acid is Sodium Benzoate. It functions as both a preservative and an antioxidant. Natural sources of sodium benzoate include cranberries, raspberries, lingonberries, blackcurrants, and blackberries. Carbonated beverages, such as Coca-Cola Classic, include it in combination with citric acid. It's made by combining sodium hydroxide and benzoic acid. Benzyl alcohol is a similar chemical molecule (1-phenylethanol).
To make sodium benzoate from benzoic acid, an alkaline solution comprising either sodium or potassium hydroxide is mixed with strong sulfuric acid to make oleum. This produces benzoates when it combines with benzoic acid, which is a salt in water and alcohol solvents. Carbon dioxide gas is produced as a byproduct of these reactions, which is utilised to make soda water in some countries.
Applications:
Benzoic Acid
· The use of benzoic acid in the synthesis of phenol is required. Ointments containing benzoic acid are used to prevent or treat fungal skin infections.
· In the food sector, C6H5COOH is used as a preservative. Many cosmetic items, such as lipsticks, use benzoic acid as a component.
· Benzoic acid is used to make benzoyl chloride.
· Benzoic acid is a component of toothpaste, mouthwash, and face wash creams.
· Benzoic acid is also used in the production of insect repellents and colours.
Sodium Benzoate
Because of its antibacterial and taste properties, sodium benzoate has been employed in a wide range of products. It is the world's most frequently used food preservative, appearing in both food and soft drink products. Margarine, salsas, maple syrups, pickles, preserves, jams, and jellies all include it.
Sodium benzoate is found in almost every diet soft drink, as well as several wine coolers and fruit juices. It's also in toothpaste, dentifrice cleaners, and mouthwashes, among other things.
Sodium benzoate has the advantage of being a low-cost preservative. One disadvantage is its astringent flavour, which can be mitigated by using a lower dose of another preservative such as potassium sorbate.
Market Outlook:
After rising at a CAGR of 9.5 percent from 2020 to 2025, the Benzoic Acid Market is expected to reach $2.4 billion by 2025.
The benzoic market has shown favourable growth in recent years as a result of its dominance in application categories, and it is likely to continue to grow at a quicker rate throughout the forecast period.
The replacement of phthalate plasticizers with non-phthalate plasticizers, notably in European and North American countries, has created a huge market opportunity for benzoic acid producers, who are seeing an increase in its use in the paper sector.
Because of the rising demand for frozen food products and beverages around the world, the processed and packaged food and beverage business is also seeing significant expansion. The benzoic acid market segment of the end-use food & beverages industry is predicted to rise due to rising demand for food preservatives in China and India.
From 2021 to 2028, the Sodium Benzoate Market is estimated to increase at a CAGR of 4.3 percent.
Because of the rising demand for convenience meals and food products with extended shelf lives, the worldwide sodium benzoate market is likely to grow rapidly over the forecast period.
To maintain product quality, increase product safety, and extend product shelf life, sodium benzoate is widely used as a preservative in a variety of industries, including food and beverage, cosmetics, and medicines. It is mostly employed as a preservative in foods with a pH less than 4.5; the efficiency of sodium benzoate improves as the pH decreases.
Another factor that is expected to drive the global sodium benzoate market during the projected period is the increased usage of synthetic preservatives on poultry and meat in the Asia Pacific and Middle East & Africa regions.
